The Vitality of Ruby and Jasper
July’s heat is heavy, but it’s that slight breeze when a cloud crosses the clear sky or the snap of cold from a stream that brings a sense of vitality and almost renewal in these sweltering temperatures. That same vitality and strength are present in July's birthstones; Ruby and Jasper.
Ruby’s deep faceted red is softened by light-scattering inclusions giving it an almost unearthly red glow. Ancient Indians noted the ruby’s otherworldly features calling it the “king of precious stones” for its rarity, hardness (second only to diamond), beauty and seemingly mystical powers.
Ruby's strength and power (it's name literally derived from the Latin word ruber, meaning “red” – the color of love and passion) are perfectly balanced by its counterpart, Jasper.
A grounding and nurturing mineral, earthly Jasper is detailed and unique due to the organic material contained inside, which often oxidizes during formation to complete interesting arrangements. The color and design variations of this gem seem endless, from abstracted landscape patterns to unexpected color combinations, there's a little something for everyone.
As 2020 barrels on, it's always nice to know just a little more about our organic friends. Minerals formed in the depths of the earth, discovered, polished and worn to remind us of whatever we might need that day; balance, vitality, passion and courage.
